Robots that mop and vacuum offer the convenience of cleaning both dry debris (dust, dirt) and wet messes (spills, stains) in one go without the need to switch out devices. They can also reduce space compared to two separate units, especially in smaller living areas.

A good combination bot will offer excellent navigation and obstacle avoidance. Look for models that have docks that allow them to automatically empty their bins, fill their water tanks, and wash the mopping pads.

1. Eufy S1 Pro

It's one of the easiest robots to set up that we've tested. Unpacking is simple, and the quick-start guide gets you running in no time with a full dust bag, water tank and hard floor solution.

The S1 Pro is an incredibly powerful machine that can vacuum and mop well. The mops are spun at high speed and use 2.2 pounds (1kg of force) to remove dirt, pet hair and sticky dried spills. The vacuum cleaner comes with four power settings, a variety of attachments and brushes and an intuitive app that lets you choose the kind of cleaning you'd like for each room.

For instance, you could decide to let the robot take care of a thorough clean-up in the kitchen and living rooms but take it easy in the spare bedroom. The S1 Pro's front collision sensors and its smart navigation technology are also excellent as the robot is able to detect tiny obstacles that other models have difficulty overcoming. The only issue it has is that it can hit objects and walls at a high speed, but just a glance at the history of cleaning in the app tells you exactly what it's doing and where it's headed and what obstacles it's run into or avoided.

The docking station comes with an LCD display that indicates the time when maintenance is required like emptying the debris and cleaning the dirty water tank. It can also mix detergent automatically into the water tank, with a 600ml bottle of eufy's own solution.

Both the S1 Pro mop and vacuum have a long running time. The mop can operate for 184 mins in Quiet Mode, and the vacuum can last 136 mins in normal mode, prior to needing to recharge or returning back to the base. The app is easy to use and intuitive, allowing you to look at every aspect of the cleaning.

2. Roborock S8 Pro Ultra

The Roborock S8 Pro Ultra is the most recent version of the company's top robot mop and best automatic vacuum. This year's model has an agitator that doubles as its mopping pad. This increases the carpet cleaning capabilities of this model. The S8 Pro Ultra has an improved suction capacity that enables it to remove smaller hairs as well as other debris other robotic cleaner and mop cleaners might miss.

This Roborock model, like the other two models I tested, has infrared and reactive 3D obstacle avoidance technology to help it get around obstacles like walls, furniture and other obstacles. But the S8 Pro Ultra takes things a step further by adding a dual camera which can detect objects and determine whether they are a wall or another surface. It can then automatically change its direction and clean them without skipping a beat.

It's the most expensive model I've tested, but it also has the most features. Its sleek and angular design is striking and comes with three buttons that are physically accessible. The power button, which also restarts the cleaning mop function, a button for cleaning that doubles as a child-lock, and a home-button to take the robot to its dock. The hinged lid can be lifted to reveal the 350ml dust bin as well as a 200ml water tank. The water tank automatically emptys and the bin automatically refills.

The only issue I have discovered with this model is that its VibraRise mop pad mount isn't movable. It is possible to change the mopping cloth if required, but it's not easy to remove the mount for washing manually. I've noticed that any carpet that the robot crosses will come into contact with the rough Velcro like fastener system on the mounts, which can cause abrasions.

The S8 Pro Ultra is equipped with a number smart features, including support for Google Home and Amazon Alexa. The Roborock app allows you to manage and set up these smart features. It also has maps and advanced mopping options. The app also allows you to schedule cleanings and monitor the life of batteries and maintenance on components. You'll have to go through a series of steps to activate voice control on this model. It's a shame, considering how well-performing it is otherwise.

3. Dreame X40

Users can program the X40 to clean at specific times, adjust suction power and mode, see mapping and floor plans, and manage mopping settings. The X40 can also monitor its progress and notify you when it's done.

The X40 is easy to maintain and comes with many features which make it a good choice for busy families. The docking station automatically empty the dustbin and wash the mop pads and refill them with cleaning solution and fresh water. It also can detect when the mop pad is full and notify you when it overflows, thus reducing the necessity for manual maintenance.

4. L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra robot is one of the most expensive models available. It has several characteristics that make it stand out. The mops come with a brand new feature called Smart DuoScrub that utilizes two mops that are high-speed to clean floors more thoroughly than the traditional method, and has the highest suction power of 7,000Pa. This is significantly higher than the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra or Ecovacs Deebot T20 Omni, and it can vacuum up pet hair and small dirt particles - as well as picking up spills and wet spots.

The mops are also cleaned and dried inside the base station after each use. This is a great feature as it keeps mould and unpleasant odours that can build up in the storage. The mopping system is also well designed, and the double rotating mop is a great choice for robot vacuums Uk hard floors or in corners. The MopExtend feature lets them reach up to 2mm below baseboards.
