You'll need a hub in order to use SmartThings, and it's not cheap. Samsung offers a variety of ones - including the SmartThings Station, which you can connect to your router, and can be used as an nightlight. There's a lower-cost SmartThings hub dongle that can support Z-Wave, Zigbee and Thread.

Once you've connected your smart refrigerator to your phone and hub, it is very simple to use. SmartThings lets you control your refrigerator from anywhere. Notifications are sent to your phone when it is closed or opened. You can create schedules, set the temperature and even set reminders.

SmartThings is a founding member of the Home Connectivity Alliance, which is working to make major home appliances from a variety of manufacturers compatible. Samsung has spent an entire year working on the Family Hub fridges based on feedback from customers. One of the major changes is that you can now create different profiles for every member of your household so they can tailor the information and apps they can access. It's not as great as having Alexa integration integrated into your refrigerator however it's a step up on the previous model.

Besides its features for entertainment and grocery management, Family Hub also acts as a controller for Samsung's SmartThings platform. It can onboard Matter-compatible devices, like lights and plugs, and you can use the touchscreen to control them.

samsung fridge freezer models's fridge is a few years old, and while it still has a lot of functionality but its touchscreen features aren't something that most people would consider an essential feature. These are more of a fun and somewhat frivolous feature than anything else.

This could change as more software updates are made available, but for now these models are ideally suited to those who want the most complete connected fridge possible. If you aren't one of those, you could opt for a less expensive model that doesn't have the Family Hub to save some cash. If you have a lot of smart home appliances that you want to manage from a single screen, or you love the idea of having a refrigerator with a huge touchscreen, it could be worth the cost.
