Bedside cots (also known as co-sleepers or bassinets) are designed to allow parents to rest with their baby at night without fear of SIDS. However they are not suggested for use until 6 months when your baby will be required to be moved into a cot or a moses basket.

Size

Cots are smaller than cots. They are less than. Cots can also be transformed into toddler beds. However they are typically intended for children who are the age of three. If you're considering a wooden cot, there are typically two sizes available both large and standard both of which will convert into a toddler bed or cot bed. The larger one is a good choice when you want your child to sleep in it until the age of +/- three.

Height

When you are choosing a cot for your bed be sure to choose one that can be raised to a height that is comfortable for you when feeding the baby. It should also be able to be lowered away from the way, so that you can pull your baby towards you to feed them at night or comfort him. This feature is particularly useful if you're recovering from C-section. For instance the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted to a height of 58cm while the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm, and the Knuma Huddle up to 70cm.

Another thing to think about is how low you want the base of your cot to be. While some mothers find it easier to get their babies out of traditional Moses baskets when they are at the lowest height, others prefer having a higher base that gives them more stability. Keep in mind that a bassinet/bedside sleeper cot sleeping device is only suitable until your baby can hold their head up without assistance generally approximately 6 months. It is also important to be aware that if your child is old enough to be able to convert a bassinet/bedside sleeping system into a cot, you will have to remove the sides once they are able to do this. There are many different styles of cribs for bedside use that range from basic to extravagant. The more expensive options could include features such as a built-in night light and a calming centre which plays music and sounds and comes with two levels of vibrating to help soothe your baby back to sleep, or the swivelling base which makes it easier to reach your baby for feedings. There are also models which can be made into a cot bed or toddler bed (or both) which is ideal when your child is ready to transition to a larger bed.

It's bigger than the other bedside cribs that we tested, but it folds down into its travel bedside crib bag to make it compact when not in use.

Safety

A large bedside cot's main security characteristic is that it can easily be moved up or down so that parents can reach their baby to feed or comfort them, or change his or his or her nappy. This makes it ideal for new mothers who may still be recovering from a C-section. It is recommended to choose an option that allows you to lower the side of the bed by pressing a button. This will allow you to easily lift your child without having to get out of the bed. This is particularly crucial as your baby grows older and becomes more mobile. Beware of items that could increase the risk of injury or suffocation, like duvets and pillows which could cause your baby to overheat.

The CPSC's NPR includes 24 incidents that are attributed to product issues that include gaps between the bedside sleeper (adult bed) and the bedside sleeper (12 incidents) and enclosed openings with fabric sides (11) and consumer assembly errors (6 incidents).

In its NPR, the CPSC considered the possibility of adding additional requirements for sleepers in bed, such as the requirement that these products satisfy the minimum side height requirement for bassinets or at the very least, meet the maximum height requirement for the side rail. The CPSC determined, however, that these requirements weren't efficient or effective in reducing amount of instances where infants are trapped between the bedside cot co sleeper rail and an adult bed.

Many of the reported incidents in the NPR included multi-use bedside sleepers that can be converted to different modes like bassinets and play yards. Several commenters suggested that the CPSC include in the proposed rule an alternative option for multi-use bedside sleepers that would enable them to meet the minimum side-height requirement of bassinets through the use of an attachment that is removable and can be permanently connected or disconnected when the item is not being used as the bassinet.

The CPSC is examining these and other comments that were received in response to its NPR on bedside sleepers. The Commission will be examining these comments when deciding on the final rule, which is expected to be published in the month of November 2021.
