Choosing a Large Bedside Cot

Bedside cots (also known as co-sleepers and bassinets) are designed to allow parents to sleep close to their baby at night without fear of SIDS. However they are only suitable for use up to 6 months when your baby will be required to move into a cot or moses basket.

Size

Height

When choosing a crib for your bed, choose one that can be adjusted to a comfortable height for you. This will prevent them from getting out or falling out of the bed.

There are many different styles of cribs for beds with a range of styles from simple to luxurious. Safety

In its NPR the CPSC looked into the possibility of adding more requirements to bedside sleepers. For instance, these products would have to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets or at a minimum, the maximum height requirements for the lowered rail. The CPSC found, however that these requirements weren't efficient or effective in reducing amount of instances where infants are trapped by the bedside rail as well as an adult bed.

A majority of the incidents reported in the NPR involved multiuse bedside travel crib sleepers that could be converted into different modes like bassinets and play yards. Many commenters suggested that the CPSC include a different provision to the proposed rule for bedside crib that turns into cot sleepers with multiple uses that would permit them to meet minimum side height requirements for bassinets using an attachment that can be removed. Attachments can be permanently connected or removed when the item is not being used as a bassinet for babies.

The CPSC is reviewing these comments and others received in response to the NPR regarding bedside sleeping. The Commission will take into account these comments when deciding on the final rule, which is expected to come out in November 2021.
