There are models that can mop and charge themselves, which is a feature important for families with pets or children. Many of the top performers in our tests have good obstacle avoidance.

1. iRobot Roomba i3+ EVO

The i3+ EVO and its i3 EVO sibling the i3 EVO are the same robots that differ only in that the i3+ has self-emptying capabilities. This makes the i3+ an excellent choice for people who want a hands-off, fully automated cleaning experience, but don't mind taking the time to empty their robot's trash bin as it gets full.

Both robots are good in removing dirt and dust particles on floors and carpets and are able to navigate around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software creates intelligent maps of your home that help the i3+ EVO to navigate and clean in a way that maximizes efficiency. The i3+ isn't able to have the same obstacle avoidance capabilities as the i7+ or other top-rated robots we tested. It may be stuck on power cords and socks, and may have trouble navigating between different surfaces like hardwood and rug.

iRobot suggests that you clear areas in which the i3+ EVO will vacuum before you use it, including getting rid of any toys or clutter it might encounter. You should also keep the dustbin and filters clear to avoid getting blocked. If the i3+'s internal bin is empty or the battery is not fully charged, it returns to the docking station, and it automatically emptys the dirt into the docking station's dust bin. Then it continues cleaning where it left off. The i3+ EVO's batteries last for about an hour and a half continuous use. It takes about three hours to recharge.

2. Roomba from iRobot

The iRobot Roomba i7+ is the top model of the flagship line from iRobot, and it is equipped with the most recent features. It's self-charging, self-navigating and the most important feature of all -- it comes with a self-emptying dustbin that eliminates one of the primary sources of maintenance for any best robot vacuum cleaner vacuum.

The Roomba i7+ can keep up to 10 floor plans and their names using Imprint Smart Mapping, which lets it create maps of rooms so that it can clean them more efficiently. It also works with iRobot Home to schedule cleaning tasks, and it can control your robot through the app or voice.

In our testing, the i7+ was quicker and more maneuverable than our second-placed model and the eufy RoboVac G30, and it removed large chunks of pet hair from all surfaces types, including carpeting. The biggest advantage over the Eufy is its self-emptying bin which eliminates the main sources of maintenance and lowers the cost of recurring maintenance.

We were also impressed by the i7+'s compatibility with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant AI services. We used these services to instruct the robot to begin or stop cleaning sessions, as well as to move around the room and to vacuum a particular area. The iRobot Home App made it easy to connect the i7+ with these services. After connecting we were able to communicate with the i7+ using voice commands, such as "Hey Alexa, vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home app also provides options for managing the i7+'s settings and monitoring its performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

This tiny Dyson model is an all-sports car in a world of vacuums with cords that feel like minivans and buses. It's powerful and has features to replace a stand-up vacuum in many households however, it can also fit in well next to the table for a coffee or shelves where you can move it around like a magic tool.

The V10 is powered by a 7-cell, high-energy lithium-ion battery that can provide energy that is not faded for 60 minutes. The sophisticated whole-machine filter system is able to trap allergens and then releases fresh air into your home. The cleaning head is specially designed to drive bristles made of nylon that are stiff into carpet to collect large dust and crumbs. It has three suction modes to suit the task being performed. It is able to swiftly change from automatic floor vacuum vacuum to handheld remote vacuum and vice versa.

This model comes with a dock that can charge the Dyson to 100% in 3.5 hours. It also offers easy access to 2 attachments and a wand. This is a big improvement over the older Dysons models, that require a long charge and are difficult to store.

The V10's biggest drawback is its short run time. As CR's tests have shown, its marketing claims of up to 60 minutes are misleading. This is a standard battery-powered cordless vacuum's running time. It's enough time to vacuum a typical-sized home however, it's not enough time to reach every area. (A second pass is usually sufficient). This model has its own advantages however: it's lighter and more maneuverable than older Dysons cordless models and its ability to vacuum is significantly better for carpet floors with low pile.

4. iRobot Roomba 694"

One of iRobot's most adored robot vacuums The 694 is an affordable model that's a great option for those who don't want to spend too much on a robotic. It's capable of sucking up all types of debris and sizes during our tests, and it frequently goes over the same areas multiple times to ensure a thorough clean. Its flat front end helps it to reach into corners and along the walls' edges and walls, which is a nice feature.

Its navigation system is smart and uses iAdapt technology to avoid obstacles and navigate your home. However, it lacks the mapping capabilities of more advanced models, like our top picks, the i3+EVO and J7+ Series. It can get stuck on phone cords or furniture and is often unable to supply power before returning to its original location.

It also feels more sturdy and has a stronger motor, and performs notably better on both bare floors and low-pile carpet, while providing a wider array of automation features.

5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+

Samsung is a well-known brand in the field of home electronics. It's not surprising, then, that they are also among the top manufacturers of best robot vacuum under 200 vacuums and mop. Jet Bot AI+ has a cutting-edge onboard technology for navigation and obstacle avoidance.

The app provides plenty of options to customize your robotic cleaner, such as virtual barriers, mopping water levels and behavior customization, docking frequency settings, and much more. It's easy to understand and user-friendly, as is the case with other Samsung devices.

In our tests of the Jet Bot AI+ excelled on hard floors and handled dog hair (on carpet) quite well, cleaning up 86 percent of it. It did not do well in avoiding taller items such as socks or cords. This was disappointing. It's also a bit more expensive than the other models we tried and could be a deal-breaker for some buyers.

The smart vacuum comes with an onboard camera that can be accessed through the app, and you can also create a live stream from the robot's cleaning station.
