Following the 1993 film Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's return to the wild, marine biologists hoped Lolita might have a similar fate. Sadly, she did not get the chance to return to the ocean.

Lolita's captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a vet and continued to put her at risk. They sabotage her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, overexerting her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and sabotaging her immune system. They also put her in a tank one-and-a-half times smaller her natural habitat.

Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who consider her an ancestor in a plan to eventually move her to open waters.
