The stats of an item are improved by upgrading it, also known as "upping". Each upgrade increment boosts the stat linearly.

Upgrade components

An upgrade for an item in Guild Wars 2 is a process that can increase the effectiveness of your weapons and armor. This can be achieved in a variety of ways, including by using upgrade components or increasing the rarity of an item or its mark level. Additionally there are many items that can be reforged to boost their stats even more.

You can purchase upgradeable items throughout the game. They are available throughout all over the world, as well as rewards for missions. They can also be crafted by players. Upgrade components are the primary method to upgrade equipment. These are the items that slot into equipment. Most equipment has upgrade slots, and most require a certain upgrade level. Some upgrade components offer specific bonuses, while others give general bonuses.

There are many types of upgrade components that are available in the game. These include universal upgrades, inscriptions, and jewels. Universal upgrades, such as gems and enchantments, are able to be put in any type of equipment and offer less bonuses than those that are type specific. Glyphs can only be placed in gathering tools and provide numerous bonuses, ranging from increasing the speed of the item's collection to providing additional crafting materials.

To upgrade an item, click it from your inventory and open the Upgrade window. The preview will appear on the right hand side of the screen. It will display the expected statistics after the upgrade. If you don't possess enough of either the upgrade button will show as Blocked.

The upper-right side of the screen shows the number of upgrade components needed for the specific Best item upgrade. The cost of an upgrade increases with the level and rarity of the item increase. However, you can reduce the cost by purchasing upgrades from a merchant, or trading them with other players.

Most weapons can be upgraded by the use of a prefix upgrade for example, an insignia or rune, and many can be upgraded with a suffix upgrade. Each glyph can increase a stat's value by a certain amount. This is shown on the item, when you open it in the Glyph Storage. This range is the maximum value that the glyph can improve a stat by and not the amount it will actually increase it by. The value of the glyph depends on the tier and quality of the item that you are in awe of.

Most upgrade components inserted into items cannot be repaired or replaced without dismantling the gear in question, except for legendary equipment and upgrades. If you have a glyph or rune you don't want to use but it hasn't been applied to gear yet, you can transfer the item to a different piece by selecting the Upgrade Glyphs menu in the Glyphs Panel. This will create an entirely new Glyph Set with the selected glyph.

You can remove a glyph by using a Black Lion Salvage Kit, or an Ascended Salvage tool. The item where the glyph is placed will be destroyed, but the upgraded item can be salvaged by removing the glyph fragments.

When you remove an item after putting a glyph on it, the shards that are part of that glyph will disappear. You can also add an inscription to your equipment to make it more valuable. Deferred Damage, for example can store damage, and then be dealt slowly to the wearer instead of all at one time. This is helpful for those who take lots of damage from enemies but don't want to be overwhelmed.

Reroll tokens

Reroll tokens are used to change the affixes of weapons and other equipment. They can be obtained from various sources, such as mysterious boxes and rare drops from skulled monsters or by killing bosses. Each reroll token gives players a new random affix, which is usually superior to the one they had before. Reroll tokens are also a great way to reroll weapon stats that can be upgraded to increase damage or perks.

Items that have been rerolled will not appear in the upgrade menu, but they still qualify to receive upgrades. Rerolled items can be recycled by pressing the "upgrade" button which alters the appearance of the window and allows up to six items to be selected to recycle. Recycling an item adds a small amount of points to its level gauge. The amount is determined by the rarity of the item and its own level, so items with higher levels are more useful to recycle than lower-level ones.

In addition to tokens for rerolls players can also use Star Remnants and Reroll Tokens to roll the weapon traits of an upgraded unit. Rerolls will roll a % chance of a weapon's traits. If it is higher, the weapon is upgraded. If it is lower, the weapon remains unchanged. Weapons can be upgraded up to three times.

Rerolling is an excellent option to upgrade an item. However, players must be aware that the total ilvl will be decreased by the number of the rerolls required to bring it to the final ilvl. This is evident on Diadems and Rings, because they are the only options to raise the ilvl.

The reroll system has been criticized by players as being too expensive, and it would be more reasonable to let players pay for it using money or food items which would allow them to change their build without wasting time and energy. However, paid rerolls are not something the developers want to implement at this point in the game's development. Instead, they're planning to add an option to change the race in the near future.

Leveling

There are many ways to boost the value of an upgrade for an item upgrader kit. The first is to increase the upgrade amount that increases the upgrade value of the stat. The second is to increase the upgrade effect which increases the damage or heal of a particular stat. The base item upgrader can be upgraded to a more advanced upgrade type. Based on the item's level of base and upgrade path, the iLevel of the upgraded item will change as well. For example an item upgraded from being a scarce or unique item to an outstanding one will have the chance to gain the Enhanced Defense of the new base item.
