Upgrade materials can be gathered by players as they clear content. They can be used to replace or improve an item. Each item requires a particular kind of upgrade material. Weapons require Destruction Stones while armor requires Guardian or Harmony Leapstones. When an item is upgraded, these materials are renamed. For example, Stone Fragments becomes Stones and Harmony Shards becomes Life Shards.

It is crucial to upgrade items to increase the performance of a character. However it is equally important to think about how much this will cost. The cost of upgrading an item upgrader kit can be a significant amount of gold which could be better spent on new gear. This cost is the reason why it is advisable to only upgrade the most important items in any given situation.

In Nioh the game, players use sets to provide special effects to players when they wear certain pieces of an Armor Set. These bonuses are known as Set Bonuses, and they can be superior to Effects. While it isn't explained how the armor sets need to be worn together to create these effects they are a good method to alter the game when playing the game. The armor sets that come with Set Bonuses can be found numerous locations around Hyrule like the Dark Moon Temple and Twilight Temple.

Each piece of equipment in a Set comes with a variety of Set bonuses that go along with it. You can identify which ones are available by hovering over the item and then looking at the tooltip near the bottom. Set Bonuses are displayed in a box with the red border.

Certain of these set bonuses are only available to certain equipment. For instance, if you purchase the full Phantom Armor set you will get +8 defense (compared to the normal +3 defense included in most equipment). Other sets are available only through specific quests or by purchasing them from the Auction House.
