A robot vacuum can keep floors clean enough to reduce the frequency at which you have to manually vacuum. Pick a robot vacuum that is well-trained in navigation, is able to clean corners and stairs and also has a large bin that will need to be cleaned out every now and then.

There are models that can mop and charge themselves, which is a feature that is essential for families with children or pets. Many of the top performers in our tests have good obstacle avoidance.

1. IRobot Roomba i3+ EVO

The i3+ EVO is identical to its sibling, the i3 EVO. They differ only in the fact that the i3+ comes with self-emptying capabilities. That makes the i3+ an excellent option for those who want an entirely automated, hands-free cleaning experience but don't mind taking the time to empty their robot's trash bin as it gets full.

Both robots are adept at picking up surface debris off carpets and hard floors and they are very good in getting around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software creates a smart maps of your home that assist the i3+ to navigate and clean efficiently. The i3+ doesn't feature obstacle avoidance features like the i7+ or other top-rated robots that we tested. It may get stuck on power cords and socks, and may have trouble navigating between different surfaces like hardwood and rug.

iRobot suggests that you clear areas in which the i3+ EVO will vacuum before you use it, including getting rid of any clutter or toys it may come across. You should also keep the filters and dust bin clear to avoid becoming clogged. When the i3+ EVO's internal bin is full or the battery is low it will return to its docking station and automatically empties its debris into the station's dust bin and continues cleaning where it began. The battery's life span is approximately an hour and a half of constant usage. It takes three hours to fully charge.

2. iRobot i7+ Roomba

The iRobot i7+ is an excellent model from iRobot's flagship line and is packed with the latest features. It's self-charging and self-navigating, but the most important feature is its auto-emptying bin. This removes the need for regular maintenance.

The Roomba i7+ is able to remember up to 10 floor plans and their names with Imprint smart robot vacuums Mapping, an application that lets it create maps of rooms so that it can clean them more efficiently. It also integrates with the iRobot Home app to let you schedule cleaning jobs and direct your robot by voice or through the app.

In our testing the i7+ was quicker and more maneuverable than our second-placed model, the eufy RoboVac G30, and it took large pieces of pet hair from all surfaces kinds including carpeting. The biggest advantage over the Eufy is its self-emptying garbage bin which removes major maintenance sources and reduces the cost of maintenance.

We were also impressed by the i7+'s integration with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant AI services, which we used to instruct the robot to start, stop or pause its cleaning session and move around the room, and even vacuum an area. The iRobot Home App made it easy to connect the i7+ with these services. Once connected, to voice commands to the i7+, for example "Hey Alexa vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home app also provides options for managing the i7+'s settings and monitoring its performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

In a world filled with vacuums that are cordless and feel like minivans or buses, this tiny Dyson model is an old-fashioned sports car. It has the power and features to replace a stand-up vacuum for many households and can fit perfectly next to the table for a coffee or a bookshelf that you can spin around like an enchanted wand.

The V10 is powered by seven cells of energy-dense Lithium-ion batteries that produces power that is not fading for 60 minutes. Its advanced whole-machine filter system removes allergens, and then releases clean air back into your home. The specialized head uses rigid nylon bristles that penetrate deep into carpets and pick up large dust or crumbs. It comes with three suction modes to suit the task being performed. It quickly converts from handheld vacuum to floor vacuum and back again.

The model also comes with an accessory dock that can charge to 100% in 3.5 hours and offers easy access to two attachments as well as a Wand clip. This is a major improvement over earlier Dysons which require a long charge and are difficult to store.

The main drawback of the V10 is its short run time. As CR's tests have shown, its claims to run up to 60 minutes are a bit misleading. This is a standard, not exceptional, battery-powered vacuum's run time. That's still enough run time to get rid of the majority of a home that's average size but not long enough to clean every area (though the second time around usually can be effective). This model has its own advantages, however: it's lighter and more maneuverable than earlier Dysons cordless models, and its vacuuming ability is noticeable superior on low-pile floor robot carpet.

4. iRobot Roomba 694"

One of iRobot's most adored robot vacuums, the 694 is a basic model that's a great choice for people who don't want to invest too much money on a robot. It's capable of sucking up a variety of types of debris and sizes during our testing, and it frequently goes over the same areas many times to give a thorough clean. The flat front of the unit allows it reach into corners and along the walls' edges which is a nice feature.

Its intelligent navigation system makes use of iAdapt technology to avoid obstacles and navigate your home. However, it lacks the mapping capabilities of more advanced models, such as our top picks, the i3+EVO and j7+ Series. As a result, it is sometimes stuck on things like phone cords or low furniture, and it frequently will run out of battery before returning to its home base.

The Xiaomi Mi robot is superior in many ways over the Roomba 694 in that it has fewer parts that require regular cleaning, is outfitted with an allergen-trapping HEPA filtration system, incurs lower costs for recurring expenses, has more advanced automation capabilities and is better able to navigate itself. It also has a larger dustbin and is charged faster.

The sleek RoboVac X8 has a superior battery life than the Roomba 694. It also comes with physical boundaries and can be controlled by your smartphone's voice assistance. It's also more durable, has a stronger motor, and can perform better on floors with bare or low-pile.

5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+

Samsung is a name you see on all sorts of electronic gadgets for your home, so it comes as no surprise that they're also one of the Top Rated Robot Vacuum robot vacuum and mop manufacturers. Their Jet Bot AI+ is loaded with cutting-edge onboard intelligence technology for navigation and obstacles avoidance.

The app offers a wide range of options to customize your robotic vacuum cleaners cleaner. This includes virtual barriers, mopping levels and behavior adjustments docking frequency settings, and more. The app is simple to use and understand as are other Samsung devices.

In our tests during our tests, the Jet Bot AI+ performed well on hard floors. It cleaned up 86% of dog hair (on carpet). It was not as successful in avoiding taller items like socks or cords. This was disappointing. It's priced higher than other models that we tested, and this could be a problem for some shoppers.

The smart vacuum has an onboard camera that is accessible through the app. You can also set up a live stream from the robot's cleaning station. This feature lets you monitor your pets or kids when you're away from home. The dustbin and the filter can be washed for an easy, quick clean-up. The Jet Bot AI+ also comes with a clean and tidy station that self-empties to keep the robot cleaner commercial's dustbin clear and maximizes suction power for each cleaning.

Black and Decker robots are designed specifically for flooring made of hard wood. They have an extra-wide cleaning path, and a dustbin that is 2X bigger than the competitors. This allows them to keep the area clean for longer. They also come with two side sweepers for cleaning along edges and corners. The POWERSERIES Extreme model also comes with AutoSense technology, which can tell whether it's picking up surface litter or embedded dirt and automatically adjusts the power level. It also includes a smart application that lets you see the virtual map and manage functions and schedules. Plus, you can monitor the status of the vacuum's battery and send it back to its dock to charge at the push of a button. The app lets you modify the LEDs on the top of the vacuum so that you can tell where it is focused or if it has gotten stuck.

The app makes it possible to steer the robot manually when needed. For instance my living room rug has a darkly-colored border that can make it difficult for other robots I've tested. The HRV 425BL, however, continued to move across the border without ever registering the cliff. And the ability to program a weekly cleaning schedule is a wonderful time-saving benefit.
