Alex the African Grey Parrot

Irene Pepperberg, an animal psychologist, purchased Alex in 1977 from a pet store in the Northwest Side. She began a 30-year study that would change our perception of the intelligence of birds. Alex's research disproved the belief that birds can only imitate human language, but not understand the meaning.

What is Alex?

Although this is still controversial but the fact remains that Alex laid the groundwork for research into the animal mind and consciousness. Up until his death in 2007 at the age of 31 Alex was among the most famous talking parrots in the history of the world.

What was Alex's personality?

Alex was an extremely violent member of a gang that enjoyed brutal actions. He was a popular character despite his violent tendencies, and seemed to enjoy his power over his fellow hoodlums. He was addicted to two things in his life which was violence and classical music, specifically Beethoven who's music always brought images of blood and depravity for him. He and his gang would drink milk laced with drugs to prepare themselves for "ultraviolence."

Alex's background as a parrot in an animal shop was not remarkable however, it was a great experience for him. Irene Pepperberg, his human trainer, was able teach him concepts and words quickly. Her research over thirty years on him changed the way we think about animal cognition and communication. She is grateful to Alex with helping her learn how to use the model that worked for animals as well as children with learning disabilities.

After her research with him, Dr. Pepperberg went on to conduct studies with other parrots such as Wart and Griffin. She is now a professor at the University of Washington and continues her pioneering work with birds.

What was Alex's level of intelligence?

He also demonstrated an understanding of analogies and was able to recognize the written form of words, though it was not apparent that he could connect these with spoken versions.
