Diablo 4 Item Upgrades

Item upgrades allow players to raise the level of items that can be equipped, such as weapons or armor, as well as trinkets above a certain threshold. They can be done at any upgrader NPC with the appropriate currency.

Requirements

The ability to upgrade items is an essential aspect of improving your characters' strength and efficiency in battle. Item upgrades can boost an item's stats base or add an additional suffix or prefix. The amount of stats that an item can boost is contingent on its rarity and mark level. You can find upgrades in raids and dungeons or buy them from vendors. You can also get them as a random item or by looting other players.

There is no solution to the "not worth it" feeling some players have when upgrading certain items. Ideally, the game would provide more information about an upgrade in its compare interface, for instance "X stats gained, X stats lost." This isn't practical to implement because of the complexity of the process of comparing. There simply isn't enough space in the UI to do it right.

A script that examines the requirements of an item's upgrade before allowing the item to be upgraded is another solution. Upgrade components can be inserted into armor, weapons, and trinkets. They can also be attached to gathering tools. However, the majority of upgrade components cannot be salvaged or replaced, unless through the use of an Upgrade Extractor. The only exception is the glyphs. They are salvageable using the Black Lion Salvage Kit, or Ascended Salvage tool.

Upgrading an item can cost gold or Dilithium according to the item type. Some upgrades also require Flightstones or crests. The number of crests and Flightstones needed to upgrade an item is contingent on the level of the gear and a maximum upgrade level is set by Blizzard. Upgrading to the highest upgrade level can be costly particularly when you're upgrading gear for PvE.
