Height

When choosing a bedside cot choose one that can be elevated to a level that is comfortable for feeding your the baby. It must also be able to be dropped down so that you can lift your baby up towards you during night feedings or for soothing. This feature is particularly useful in the event of recovering from a C-section. For example the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted to the height of 58cm. the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm and the Knuma Huddle up to 70cm.

It is also important to consider the height you'd like the base of your crib to be. Some mothers find it is easier to lift their babies from their standard Moses baskets if the base is at the lowest level, while others prefer a higher elevation to give them more stability. It also includes an easy-to-clean liner, reflux incline and rocking function. It's a bit bigger than other cribs for bed we've tried, but it folds flat in its travel cot bedside bag, so it's quite compact when not in use.

Safety

A large bedside cot's main security characteristic is that it can be easily adjusted or moved so that parents can reach their child to feed, comfort or change his or her diaper. This is ideal for mothers who are recovering from the C-section. It is recommended to choose an option that allows you to lower the side of the bed with a simple button press. This will allow you to easily lift your child without having to get out of bed. This is especially crucial as your baby grows older and more mobile. Beware of items that could increase the risk of injury or suffocation like duvets and pillows which could cause your baby to overheat.

The NPR released by the CPSC NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to product problems, such as gaps between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents) Fabric-side enclosed openings (11 incidents); consumer misassembly or missing components (6 incidents); and miscellaneous other product-related issues (9 incidents).

In its NPR, the CPSC looked into the possibility of additional requirements for sleepers in bed, such as the requirement that these beds satisfy the minimum side height requirement for bassinets, or at the very least, meet the maximum height requirement for the lowered side rail. The CPSC decided, however, that these requirements were not efficient or effective in reducing number of instances in which infants are entrapped by the bedside cot mattress rail as well as an adult bed.

The majority of the reported incidents in the NPR included multi-use bedside sleepers that could be converted into other modes such as play yards and bassinets. A number of commenters suggested that the CPSC add a second clause to the proposed rule for bedside sleepers with multiple uses which would permit them to meet minimum side height requirements for bassinets by using an attachment that is removable. This attachment can be permanently connected or removed when the product is not being used as a baby bassinet.

The CPSC is examining these and other comments received in response to its NPR regarding bedside sleepers. The Commission will take into consideration these comments when it decides on the final rule, which is expected to be released in the month of November 2021.
