Path of Exile Item Upgrading

The ability to upgrade items allows players to upgrade their weapons and gear with new affixes that boost the base stats of the item or adding additional perks. To upgrade an item, a player has to have it in their inventory and have access to the kiln.

Leveling

The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some significant variations from earlier versions. Gear is now broken down into tracks, and items can only be upgraded a certain number of times before being "leveled out." The cost for upgrades increases with each level, but the required materials aren't as high.
