How to Replace an audi tt key programming G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located near the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU via the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 via the grey wire. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync, replacement key for audi A3 - dsred.com - possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. However, the error code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It's a bit tricky to test because there are different connector pins, and each one has different functions. The best method for doing this is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is operational, it should be reading about 1000 ohms. Check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at full speed, i noticed a huge drop in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were drenched in gasoline and the 4th was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine without sparks, the 3 that have gazoline pop right out. The fourth one remains shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I got zero Ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car is able to start when the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in however it is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is zero.

I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much eliminated everything else. But i am afraid I may have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and both function in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a wrecking yard or at a parts store. It is simple to test them by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that must be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. To do this, it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you have a problem with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could lead to the engine shutting down.

A damaged G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox or a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, and/or a misfire while in the gear. It is probable that your sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you experience any of these symptoms. They're inexpensive and easy to locate, especially if they're an Bosch model like ours. 5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a myriad of issues in your vehicle.
