Upgrades will give you a boost to specific stats. Each upgrade item increases the level of an item by 3. Each upgrade also boosts the random substatus.

The upgraded gear is usually more useful, unless the item is not required by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a large variance in stats (like eth Titan weapons). Upgrades aren't as important for those with lower requirements due to the requirement to roll a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The upgrader for items allows players to upgrade their gear to a higher item level by providing the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of weapon or armor. However, the item used for the upgrade will remain in use for a long time and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be used to create the enchantments.

You can upgrade your gear at any time by visiting the upgrader in any major city. To ensure that your equipment is up-to-date, it is recommended that you visit the upgrader every couple of weeks.

The cost of upgrades will vary based on the current item level of the gear being upgraded, but will always be less expensive than buying new equipment from other sources. Upgrades like upgrading a Benthic chest to 385 ilvl will cost you 20 recycle points. A similar item will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used to purchase weapons, armor, tools, and accessory upgrades. They can be bought by players through item upgrader NPCs in exchange for various currencies, and can be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be applied to any weapon, tool or armor. The button will show the preview of an item's next level of upgrade, in the event that there are enough materials.

The cost of upgrading is based on the slot of the item and the current item level and the weapon's price is higher than bracers or gloves, for example. Each upgrade cost 15 Flightstones and a number of crests, with some upgrades offering discounts to lower the cost of the Flightstones or crests that are used. Once an item upgrading has been upgraded to a certain degree, it can be degraded and sold back to the upgrader for a lower amount of both currencies.

Upgraders for items are available in many places including the main island and some outposts. The NPCs offer an upgrade coupon as well as the chance to obtain the latest recipe. The discount for upgrades increases with the number of items that are being upgraded, and can be boosted by having players complete some specific achievements or quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an item upgrader at start unlike Cromwell from Baldur's gate II. Instead, the NPCs that are available to facilitate upgrades are acquired via a variety of means, which is both an improvement but also a drawback.

In Season 3, many new features were added to the upgrade system. Once the player has upgraded to a certain level of item for an armor slot, upgrading other items to the same level, will cost less. This applies even if the items are from another set of equipment.

Utilizing these new currencies isn't too complicated, but the system does introduce some modifications to the upgrade process. For instance, once an item upgrader mod is at the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic) it won't require Flightstones to be upgraded. This change is designed to allow players to upgrade their gear up to the highest ilvl possible on all their characters instead of relying only on seasonal loot.

Another important change is that crests only have one use, so it's important to make use of them in a responsible manner. It is best to use your Whelpling-rank Crests on the highest-quality gear that you can find and keep Drake and Wyrm Crests for the next round of upgrades. This is especially applicable to items like rings and trinkets that occupy several slots. The discount for the entire account is only applicable when all the slots on the character are filled with high-quality gear.
