Diablo 4 Item Upgrades

Item upgrades allow players to increase the item upgrader level of items that can be equipped, such as weapons, armor, and trinkets up to a certain amount. They can be done at any item upgrader NPC with the appropriate currency.

Slots are used to upgrade components into equipment to increase attributes and bonuses, as well as other effects. They are generally slot-restricted, however, there are some universal upgrades.

Rerolling

A player can roll an item upgrade in Diablo 4. This is accomplished through the Level Up mechanic, which stops the game and shows a list of four randomly chosen upgrades. Some sets have set bonuses that give additional effects if Link wears the whole set. They are beneficial in certain situations, for instance when exploring the Gerudo Desert or in a dark dungeon. The exception is glyphs that can be salvaged with the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool.

Depending on the type of item, upgrading it may cost Dilithium or gold. Additionally, many upgrades require Flightstones and/or crests. The amount of crests or Flightstones required to upgrade an item varies on the gear's level and a maximum upgrade level is set by Blizzard. Upgrades to the highest level can be costly especially when it comes to upgrading PvE gear.

The upgrades to items can also alter a weapon's ammunition type or damage die size, alter its operative or unwieldy weapon's property, or change the hand requirements. Certain upgrades can alter the appearance of the weapon.

Before you make a decision it is important to consider the cost involved in upgrading an item. You may prefer to make use of your gold to upgrade rare items, but do not spend it on common or magical-tier items. These aren't worth upgrading, and rare items will soon outclass them.
