The base comes with a few control buttons that allow you to manually start cleaning tasks and then recall the robot vacuum with mop or run the dock's automatic vacuum cleaner emptying procedure. Hold down two buttons to turn off a child lock that is a great touch for parents worried about kids tinkering with the vacuum.

Like other robotic vacuums, the X1 Omni utilizes its camera to spot furniture and obstacles in its path and avoid them. Its True Mapping 2.0 navigation system maps your home 10 times faster than standard laser detection systems and is four times more precise at finding objects.

Unfortunately, this means that the X1 Omni will occasionally get caught up in obstacles, like a power cord draped across a rug, that it gets stuck and stops working until you free it. This is a rare event, but frustrating nonetheless, since the X1 does not have a "stuck status" alert on its application.

The X1 Omni cannot automatically switch between mopping and vacuuming mode during a cleaning session. You will have to manually switch between the two modes, which isn't that bad but the mopping pad doesn't get cleaned or dried between uses. This could lead to mildew and mold.

The X1 Omni looks great, thanks to the Jacob Jensen design team (of Bang & Olufsen fame) who designed its sleek, modern base and mopping pad. It's a major departure from the utilitarian, all-black bases that are used by rivals like Roborock and iRobot, and a welcome view in a market that is dominated by bulky boxes and clunky models.
