Path of Exile Item Upgrading

item upgrading (Additional Info) allows players to upgrade their weapons and equipment with new affixes, increasing the base stats of the Best item upgrader or giving additional benefits. To upgrade items, the player must have the item in their inventory and have access to the kiln.

Typically objects with weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a stronger base, whereas items with strong bases such as eth titans aren't affected in their stats following being upgraded.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components can be slotted into trinkets, armor, weapons and tools for gathering, offering an attribute bonus or extra effect when the equipment is in use. They can be purchased from vendors, found as loot by enemies, or obtained from chests and missions. Some upgrades can have additional cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be above a certain point before they are upgraded.

To upgrade an armor, weapon or other item in the game, players will have to select it and then click the Upgrade button on the toolbar. This will show a preview on the right side of the screen that shows what the expected upgrade statistics will be and also the necessary material or component needed to complete the upgrade.

There are three types of upgrade components: universal upgrades, prefix upgrades, and suffix upgrades. Universal upgrades, which comprise gems, can be put in any kind of equipment and offer less bonuses than upgrade components that are restricted to a specific type. Infusions, which can only be placed in ascended gear and legendary equipment are exactly the same as gems, but offer higher bonuses and cannot be used in any other kind of equipment. Suffix upgrades can be added to gathering tools. They add a suffix to the end of the item's name. For instance adding a Glyph could transform the staff wrapping of Minor Vigor a Canthan staff wrapping of Minor Vigor.

If a player upgrades a gathering tool, and replaces the glyphs by a different one the previous one will be returned to their inventory. If you replace any other upgrade component with a glyph, it will be destroyed, except for inscriptions, which can be freely swapped.

Leveling

The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some important differences from previous versions. Gear is now divided into tracks, and items can only be upgraded a set number of times before being "leveled out." The upgrade costs increase with each level, but the materials required for upgrades do not. This allows players to focus their efforts on a couple of important items to maximize their impact instead of spreading upgrade costs across multiple items.

If an item is finished being leveled, it will be capable of receiving an upgrade set of components, as well as an increase in the likelihood that the upgrade will succeed. This bonus is called the Artisan’s Energy and it resets to 0 if an upgrade fails, or increases if the upgrade succeeds.

Sets
