WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades will give you a boost to certain stats. Each upgrade boosts the item level by +3. Each upgrade also boosts the random substatus.

Upgraded gear is generally more useful, unless the item level upgrade has low requirements by nature (like FB sorc shields) or a high stat variance (like eth Titan weapons). Upgrades are not as valuable for the latter because of the requirement to roll a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader lets players upgrade their gear by giving the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any kind of weapon or armor. The item used to upgrade the item upgrade will be consumed and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be used to create enchantments.

You can upgrade your gear anytime by visiting the upgrader in any major city. It is recommended to visit the upgrader at least once every few weeks to keep your equipment up to date.

Upgrades will cost more depending on the level of the item upgrades, however, they are always cheaper than purchasing new equipment. For example, upgrading a Benthic chest to 385 levels will cost 20 recycle points, while purchasing the same item from a different player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are useful items which can be used to improve the quality of weapons tools, armor, and accessories. They can be purchased by players from item upgrader NPCs in exchange for a variety of currencies, and may also be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be used on any tool, weapon or armor. The button will show the preview of an item's next upgrade level when there are enough materials.

The cost of upgrades varies based on the item slot and the current level of the item and the weapon's price is higher than gloves or bracers, for example. Each step costs 15 Flightstones and a variety of crests, with certain upgrades offering discounts to reduce the cost of the Flightstones or the crests used. After an item has been upgraded to a certain degree it is able to be downgraded and sold to the upgrader for a lower price.

Many locations have upgraders for their items in addition to the main island and some outposts. The NPCs offer an upgrade coupon and a possibility of obtaining an entirely new recipe. The discount for upgrading increases when more items are upgraded. It can be increased by having players complete certain achievements or complete quests.

In contrast to Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II, there is no upgrader for items available in the beginning of Icewind Dale. The NPCs who are able to facilitate upgrades are only accessible via a variety of ways. This is both a positive and an issue.

In Season 3, several new features have been added to the upgrade system. When a player has an upgrade to a certain level of an item for a specific armor slot, upgrading further items to that level will be less expensive, even in the event that they belong to a different gear set.

The discount is available to all accounts. The amount of Harbinger Crests needed for upgrades is reduced also, but is only available after certain milestones are achieved.

Crests

Using these new currencies isn't too complicated however, the system introduces some changes to the overall upgrade process. Once a piece of gear has reached the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer) it no longer requires Flightstones. This change lets players upgrade their equipment to the highest possible level on all of their characters instead of relying on seasonal loot.

It's also important to use crests with care, since they are only used for one purpose.
