For a long time the Korean scientific community resisted engaging with the creationists out of fear of giving the movement more credence. Silence is no longer an option.

The STR has been fighting to remove content from textbooks that describe evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestral bird's ancestor. However, this is just one aspect of the evolution of the development paradigm.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a scientific theory that explains the change in the genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adapt to their environment and this can lead to changes in genes or even complete genomes. Over the course of many generations the changes could result in the creation of new species. Natural selection is the most popular theory of evolution. It explains how people with advantageous traits can reproduce faster and longer than those with less favorable traits. This differing reproduction may be a catalyst to the emergence and evolution of new species.

The term "evolution" originates from the Latin for revealing or unrolling has been used in a variety of different ways as the concept has evolved, both in science and in other fields. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to evolve into a different species. The term transmutation was coined by Lamarck's student, embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, criticized the concept of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy's student.

Recently, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living organisms develop traits that enhance their chances of survival or 에볼루션 사이트 the ability to reproduce offspring. In time this genetic variation can lead to the emergence of entirely new biological functions or physical traits in the population. This change in gene frequencies is called natural selection, and is the primary driver behind evolutionary changes. These evolutionary changes eventually will result in new species that are similar to the original.

What is Creationism in Korea?

When people think about the concept of creationism, a lot think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. The publishers of high school textbooks have recently announced that they will remove references to evolution from their books. A group dubbed the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an independent organization that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research, has led the drive. STR has secured its first victory by removing instances of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor, called the Archeopteryx in textbooks. The next step is to remove excerpts from Darwin’s infamous finch-research and also on human evolution.

STR claims that it has the support of around 4,000 families and individuals. Its goal, it says, is to rid the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which paints a negative view for students. It also aims at countering the influence of American Creationists across the country. A survey of trainees in biology revealed that half of them didn't believe in evolution. The reasons for this aren't entirely evident, 에볼루션 사이트 but they could be due to religion or the absence of creation scientists in the country.

The KACR achieved many things through its seminars and lectures in the past. It also publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and the book. Among these is a textbook on the natural sciences with an orthodox creationist perspective, which has sparked interest among college students. In 1991, a professor along with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught in the present.

On August 6 and 7, 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. This was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six foreign lecturers including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin, spoke to thousands of people. KACR and its members have given lectures on creation science at major seminaries as well. KACR intends to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
