WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades will give you a boost to certain stats. Each upgrade boosts the level of the item by +3. A random additional substat is also added to every upgrade.

The upgraded gear typically has a more value in trade, unless it has inherently low requirements (like the FB shield of the sorc) or a very high stat variance (like eth titan weapons). Upgrades are not as valuable for those with higher variance due to the requirement to roll an exact version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader lets players upgrade their gear by giving the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any kind of weapon or armor. However, the item used to upgrade will remain in use for a long time and will not be able to be used again. Upgrades can also be used to create enhancements.

The upgrader is located in all major cities and can be accessed anytime to upgrade your gear. To keep your gear current it is recommended that you visit the upgrader every couple of weeks.

The cost of upgrading will be based on the current item level upgrade level of the item being upgraded, but will always be less expensive than purchasing new equipment from other sources. Upgrades like upgrading a Benthic chest up to the level of ilvl385 will cost you 20 recycle points. Buying a similar item upgrading will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used to level up weapons, tools, armor, and other items. They can be purchased by players through NPCs who sell upgrades to item owners for various currencies. They can also find them on random treasure lists. Once an upgrade has been purchased, it can be applied to any weapon or tool with an button, which displays an item's preview at its next upgrade level if the player has sufficient materials.

upgrade item costs differ based on the item upgrades slot, and the current item level. For example weapons cost more than gloves, bracers, or bracers. Each upgrade costs 15 Flightstones plus a specific number of crests. Certain upgrades provide discounts on Flightstones. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain level it is able to be degraded and sold back to the upgrader for a lower amount of the two currency types.

Upgraders for items are available in many places on the main island, as well as a few outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade discount and the chance to obtain a new upgrade recipe. The upgrade discount increases depending on the amount of items that are being upgraded. It can also be increased by having players complete some specific achievements or quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an upgrader for items at the start, unlike Cromwell from Baldur's gate II. The NPCs that can assist with upgrades are only accessible through a variety means. This is both a benefit and an issue.

In Season 3, a number of new features were added to the upgrade system. Once a player has upgraded to a certain level of item for an armor slot, upgrading other items to the same level will cost less. This is true even if the items are from another set of gear.

Crests

This change is designed to allow players to get their gear up to the highest level possible on all their characters rather than relying solely on seasonal loot.

It's also important to use crests with care, since they are only used for one purpose. For instance, it's a good idea to use all of your Whelpling-rank crests on the Best item upgrade gear you have available and save Drake and Wyrm crests to use for the next set of upgrades you plan to create. This is particularly true for items such as trinkets and rings that fill multiple slots. The discount on the account is only applicable when all the slots on the character are filled with high-quality gear.
